Gartner recently published "Defining the Next-Generation Firewall", a research note that assesses the shortcomings of the traditional firewall in a Web 2.0 world. The report features key findings and recommendations, including:
- First-generation firewalls fail in preventing contemporary threats
- Using separate firewalls and intrusion prevention appliances results in higher costs and no increase in security over an optimised combined platform
- Next-generation firewalls can detect application-specific attacks and enforce granular application-specific security policies
