Although VPN functionality has long been available on firewalls, many firewalls now combine a number of other security functions (e.g. intrusion prevention and detection or anti-virus) into a single appliance. There has been a perception that combining a variety of security services on a single device while beneficial in terms of the breadth of security functions covered comes at the expense of depth of capabilities, flexibility and performance. The extent to which this is true varies between products, but we still believe that the best multi-service gateways represent a good way to achieve defence in depth for situations where cost is an important factor but criticality and performance are less of an issue.

At the other end of the spectrum are very high throughput, dedicated appliances suitable for high-performance scenarios which allow fully meshed configuration and sub-second failover. High specification firewalls can also support virtual systems so that multiple security domains may be supported on a single device.
