SSL VPN

SSL VPNs are gradually replacing IPSec VPNs for most remote access requirements because in contrast to IPSec, SSL VPNs do not need any VPN client software to be installed on user's machines - so they are simpler to deploy and support. This is particularly beneficial particularly for large user populations or for third party access where you may not own the device that is connecting across your VPN. The convenience of being able to use almost any Internet connected device to access the network is another huge benefit; You no longer have to issue every employee with a laptop in order for them to gain access, and employees no longer have to lug a laptop around in order to remain productive whilst away from the office.

SSL VPNs allow you to create very granular access control policies rather than the all or nothing' approach of IPSec. You can choose exactly which applications and resources different user groups may access so you can safely support many different user groups, including third parties on the same SSL VPN appliance.

If you need to provide selected users with IPSec style full network access, a hybrid form of SSL VPN is available which enables you to do this without the need for VPN client software, so you can have the less restricted access of an IPSec VPN with the convenience of it being clientless.
